Our last outdoor action of the year would see us compete in the end of season Tuki Cup, a tournament featuring the top 2 teams from both Tuki divisions, played out on the excellent artificial grass pitches in Kauppi.
Our last game defeat to rivals Peliryhmä seemingly put us into a 2nd place finish in Tuki B, meaning we would play the 1st place finishers from Tuki A. However, due to events outside of our control & some calamitous organization, our great season seemed destined to end in disappointment. After first being informed that we were actually playing in the game which would pit us as Tuki B champions, it turned out that our first presumptions were correct & we were after all playing in the earlier game which would pit us as Tuki B runners-up. This cock-up led to us having to forfeit the first game, thus putting us straight into the bronze medal play-off match later that day. Our annoyance was clear, but there was no way the forfeited game could be re-played. Our team re-grouped after the shenanigans that had gone on, & we began to look forward to our bronze-medal game which as it turned out would be against Perliryhmä, the team who beat us on the final day of the Tuki B season, thus pipping us to the Championship. The thoughts of revenge replaced the feelings of annoyance & frustration at missing our first game...
The conditions would be tough for both teams but the artificial grass surface was a joy to play on, & a refreshing change from the gravel pitches that we were all used to. We began the game at a good pace, passing the ball around well & looking dangerous in attack. Our opponents were there for the taking, looking jaded after already playing their semi-final game earlier that day. After starting so well, disaster struck as Peliryhmä opened the scoring with a breakaway goal. It seemed as though it just wasn't going to be our day. The half-time whistle enabled us to re-group & urge each other on. As the second half got under way, our dominance seemed to grow. Surely it was only a matter of time before we got ourselves back into the game. A free kick out on the left was swung in by Barry. The swirling wind seemed to take the ball, & combined with Seppo's towering jump for the ball, the goalkeeper was stranded with the ball easing its way into the back of the net. 1-1! Game on! We continued to press, with Cat merely a spectator in our goal. The next goal duly arrived, & this time there was no denying Seppo his goal. Corner was whipped in dangerously by Florin, headed back into the danger area by Sami, & there was Seppo to nod the ball into the net. 2-1!! We were now playing with great confidence, but also wary of the threat posed by our opposition. We needed another goal to take the pressure off, & it duly came following a sweet 20-yard strike from Henry. Nothing could stop us now, & to rub it into the opposition we grabbed another late goal after Florin rounded the keeper. We had triumphed 4-1 with an excellent display, thus earning each of us a well-deserved bronze medal. Though we will never know whether we would have won the tournament, the season had ended on a high & we could all relish in our success, not only for this day but for the whole season. Well done lads! |
